Community Resources in Kenya

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders and learning difficulties can access support from a range of community-based resources across Kenya.

Education Assessment and Resource Centres (EARCs)

Run by the Ministry of Education, these centres are found in many counties and provide screening, assessment, and placement support for children with special needs.

Special Needs Units and Inclusive Schools

Many public schools have special units for children with disabilities and are gradually adopting inclusive education through the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Hospitals and Health Facilities

Referral hospitals (e.g., Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital), some county hospitals, and various private hospitals offer diagnostic and early intervention services.

Government Bodies

Government institutions involved in disability care include the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), and the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE).

NGOs and Faith-Based Organizations

NGOs such as ActionAid, child-focused organizations like Save the Children, and Plan International, Action for Children with Disabilities, Chesire Disability Services, Childfund Kenya, and networks such as ANDY (Action Network for the Disabled), etc. support awareness, training, and community programs.

Parent and Peer Support Groups

Various parent-led initiatives such as the United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK), Autism Society of Kenya, Differently Talented Society of Kenya, Autism Alliance, ADAT foundations, Down Syndrome Society of Kenya, T21 support group, ADHD Kenya, APDK, etc. offer peer education, advocacy, and emotional support.

Community Health Workers (CHWs)

In rural communities, CHWs play a crucial role in identifying children with developmental concerns early and linking them to schools, health facilities, or NGOs.

Faith and Community Centres

Many churches, mosques, and community centres run child development programs that integrate play therapy, counseling, and learning support.

Private Therapy Centres and Clinics

Growing numbers of private centres mostly in urban areas (e.g., Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret) offer speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychological assessments, and early intervention services. Beacon Children's Centre is one of these centres offering comprehensive early intervention services.
